Can we stop talking about sleep?
As a first-time mom (hopefully) coming out of the thick of the 4-month sleep regression, I’m so incredibly bored of talking about sleep.
Maybe it’s because I can’t remember what a full, restful, night’s sleep feels like or maybe because it’s quite possibly the least interesting thing about me, and my daughter, lately.
4 months is famed for being all about the ‘sleep regression’ but why aren’t we talking more about the positive things that come with 4-month olds (or babies at any age for that matter).
Let’s talk more about how their tiny personalities are starting to shine through.
How their giggles melt your heart and cure your sleep deprivation all at once. Or how their incessant raspberry blowing in response to anything you say, or do, has you and your husband in stitches.
How about instead of asking mama how the baby slept (and if they got any, too), ask what her favourite thing is about this baby age or motherhood stage.
Why are we so focused on talking to new parents about what they’re getting the least of, or possibly struggling with the most, when we can be shining a light on all the positives?
For example, 4-months old has been the hardest yet most rewarding stage so far. But instead of boring you with how many times I popped the dummy back in, rocked her, or what time she went to bed, I’ll tell you all of my favourite things from this age.
Frankie is OBSESSED with her feet.
At any given moment she’s trying to get those tasty little toes in her mouth. Bath? Yep. Carseat? There too. First thing on a morning when she’s restricted by her sleepsuit AND her sleep sack? Absolutely, no doubt.
Her smile melts my heart and heals my soul. (Yes, even at 2 am when we’re all meant to be sleeping).
There is NOTHING better than the sound of her giggle. I challenge you to prove me wrong.
I love the way she cranes her neck to find her dad the moment he gets in from work and the way she stares up at him when he’s talking.
I love that we’re seeing glimpses of her cheeky personality and the way she’s started to snuggle in when you hold her up.
She’s obsessed with her fiblings (fish siblings) and could happily sit and watch them swim for hours on end.
Her favourite party trick is hiding her own face behind her bib and waiting, rather dramatically, for you to flip it off her face just for her to do it all over again.
So, while I might be bored talking about sleep I’ll happily fill you in on all the best bits of Frankie at this stage.
